This is an image of an ad that was on eBay that caught my eye a number of years ago. First, I thought the lathe pictured in the insert was simply a rendering done by an artist of what they thought an early lathe from Barnes would have looked like. The date of 1875 did stick in my mind as that was when Barnes just began making a wood lathe. Further checking other sources, did find a reference that said an early version did have a flat belt. This was different from what Barnes called their first wood lathe, the #1, (link to page on the Lathe #1) which used a round belt. Checking with other foot powered collectors, none said they had ever seen the wood lathe pictures of even a catalog cut of it.
You can imagine my surprise when I saw some pictures from somebody that was selling a collection of foot powered machinery when one showed up!! See below.

You can see the flat leather belt and a very different leg design from what the #1 lathe has.
